Making the Right Choice

To buy or not to buy: part one

When it comes to forklift trucks or any type of materials handling equipment for that matter, the decision to purchase outright is a big one. But don’t worry, here at MK2 we provide you with the option to either purchase or rent your truck depending on what suits you and your business. In this series of blog posts, we’re going to discuss the differences between purchasing and renting a forklift truck.

It would be wrong of us to not start with the obvious here, money. Purchasing a truck outright does mean that you have to tie up a lot of financial capital; however, that does mean you are in total ownership of it and it becomes a business asset. If you’re planning on running the same truck for a long time or you don’t use it frequently, this may be the best option for you.

So, you own your truck, but don’t forget about service and maintenance. Ensuring that your truck is fully operational and fit for purpose is probably the most important element of ownership. The responsibility will be on you to make sure that your truck is regularly serviced and undergoes regular thorough examination inspections, to ensure it stays safe and legal. We offer a wide range of service packages from preventative maintenance to full service and maintenance.

Of course, you can’t always predict how a business will grow or what it will look like in a couple of years’ time. What if your operation changes and you then need to move a different type of load or you move to new premises where the racking is higher? Potentially, you would have to sell the truck and you may not achieve the sale value you would expect. This could limit your options when replacing it.

Keep a look out for the follow up to this blog post which will talk about truck rental.
