Why Forklift Training is Necessary

+ Safety: forklifts are heavy machinery, and improper use can result in accidents, injuries, or even fatalities.
+ Legal Compliance: employers are legally required to ensure that forklift operators are properly trained and certified. In the UK, this is covered by LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER.
+ Efficiency: proper training ensures operators are knowledgeable about forklift functions, leading to improved productivity and reduced equipment damage.
+ Minimising Downtime: trained operators are less likely to damage equipment or injure themselves, reducing costly downtime for repairs or investigations.

Theoretical training

This covers legal responsibilities, health and safety guidelines, and the theory behind safe forklift operation, including:
+ Understanding weight limits and load capacity
+ How to perform pre-use safety checks
+ Forklift stability and balance
+ Proper handling of different loads

Practical training

Hands-on instruction on the use of forklifts. This includes:
+ Forklift controls and functions
+ Basic driving skills such as steering, reversing, and manoeuvering in tight spaces Load handling, stacking, and de-stacking
Safely operating on slopes and uneven surfaces
Refuelling or recharging (for electric forklifts)

Forklift Training and the Law

Forklift driver training is essential to ensure that operators can safely and efficiently handle forklifts in a workplace. Training is not only a safety requirement but also a legal obligation in many countries, including the UK, under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998. Operators must be properly trained and certified before they are allowed to operate a forklift.

Evaluation and Testing: at the end of the course, trainees must pass both a theoretical exam and a practical driving test. These assessments ensure that the operator understands safety principles and can competently operate a forklift.
